Yuan Yang in Beijing May 14, 2018 Print this page One of the world’s biggest American hacker conferences has attracted large numbers of people to its first China event, despite the government warning its citizens against sharing their tools with the international community.Over 1,300 people attended Def Con in Beijing last weekend despite the government ordering local hackers to abstain from some global hacking contests, as China seeks to tighten its control over technology and information.“China is the best place to take Def Con [out of the US] because in future there really will be two superpowers in internet security: the US and China,” said Jeff Moss, the conference’s founder. “Security problems are global problems and ne

Ecommerce businesses have a love-hate relationship with image search. They appreciate the conversion benefits, but they are wary of the labor required to optimize images and the risk of competitors stealing them. In an initial bulletin, the group described each of the bombings as a “martyrdom” operation. In a subsequ

TOKYO -- Baidu, the Google of the Chinese internet, will offer its services to help Japanese companies place online advertisements more effectively and develop products that appeal to inbound tourists.Baidu's Japanese arm will draw on the group's search engine, used 10 billion times a day, and its network of 17 million consumer monitors, one of China's biggest pools for surveys.Foreign multinationals looking to do market research in China face difficulty assembling surveys bigger than several hundred thousand participants. Such companies must navigate strict regulations on the Chinese internet as well, further hampering survey efforts. The larger the pool of monitors, the better that marketing teams can target surveys to particular market segments.Baidu also will partner with Tokyo-base

The one big thing that has come out of the whole Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal is that people are more aware of their privacy. Prior to it, there weren’t too many questions being asked. Knowingly or unknowingly most of us shared our data without a second though of where is it going and who’s sharing what. Not anymore though as there’s a greater sense of awareness. And companies like Google and Facebook are becoming more transparent with how your data is being used. Recently, Google came out with new privacy policy and is letting users “understand” what information is being collected. In a blog post the company noted, “We’re updating our current Privacy Policy to make it easier to understand what information we collect, and why we collect it. We’ve improved the navigation and org
