GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A 44-year-old Grand Rapids man is accused of producing child pornography after using social media to contact girls in South Carolina.

David William Barrett is charged in a multi-state investigation that began with a tip from an internet search-engine to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The center then contacted the Internet Crimes Against Child Task Force, or ICAC, in Michigan.

Barrett was arraigned in Grand Rapids District Court on one count of enticing child-sexually abusive material, two counts of manufacturing child-sexually abusive material and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

He is held on $100,000 bond, records showed.

A task force of state police detectives and Grand Rapids and Wyoming police detectives contacted Barrett on Sept. 12.

Police seized digital evidence and conducted forensic examinations of the items.

Police then contacted Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina, where police identified at least four alleged victims.

Barrett had contacted the girls through Facebook, detective Sgt. Chris Prevette, ICAC coordinator, told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press.

At this point, police do not believe that Barrett shared any materials with others on the internet, Prevette said.

Police have not found any local victims, he said.

These cases show the need for parents to monitor children’s internet activities, Prevette said.

“You wouldn’t invite a stranger into your kids’ bedroom and hang out,” he said, but that’s essentially what can happen on the internet.

He said that Facebook does a good job protecting children from predators.

“We do have a very good relationship with Facebook. They do not tolerate any exploitation (of children),” Prevette said.

The state police Computer Crimes Unit worked with the task force – comprised of multiple West Michigan police agencies – on the investigation.
