Judge Leigh Martin May of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia sentenced attorney Marc Bercoon, 57, of Atlanta, and William Goldstein, 54, of Alpharetta, to 10-year sentences Tuesday after a two-day hearing. The federal jury in Atlanta convicted them of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and securities fraud in February for their role in what’s known as a “pump-and-dump” scheme. In a pump-and-dump scheme, fraudsters artificially boost a stock’s price and generate d

Senator Ron Wyden reckons with the internet he helped shape

There may not be a lawmaker in Congress who has done more to shape the internet than Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). As a congressman, Wyden co-authored Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a piece of legislation that, in 1996, limited internet companies’ liability for what was posted on their platforms by third parties. For better or worse, Section 230 built the internet as we know it, allowing companies like Facebook to become the giants they are today. In his more than two decades as a senator since then, Wyden has continued to be a staunch defender of internet freedoms, introducing net neutrality legislation as far back as 2006 and spearheading the congressional fight over SOPA/PIPA, a legislative battle that ignited the internet and helped set the modern playbook for digital ac

SAN FRANCISCO — European authorities took their best swing, but it appears that Google hardly felt it.Less than a week after the European Union fined Google a record $5.1 billion for abusing its dominance in the smartphone market, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, said on Monday it had already absorbed the cost of the fine and still made $3.2 billion in profits in its latest quarter.Alphabet’s stock rose 3.5 percent in after-hours trading, and some analysts recommended the company’s shares. With the regulatory issue settled, they said, Google could get back to focusing on selling ads across the internet.“It’s like a delivery company having to pay for a parking ticket,” Brian Wieser, a Pivotal Research analyst, said of the penalty, which Alphabet accounted for in the second quarter. “It

Stars are born quite differently these days. Here’s one new way: imagine you’re in a molten-hot hip-hop collective, the sole woman among a clot of bratty young bucks known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. You’re Syd tha Kyd, AKA Sydney Bennett, the brooding DJ/producer at the back of the pack – not merely the lone female, but queer too, which makes the group’s homophobic outbursts all the more galling. Your uncle is a Jamaican reggae producer who co-wrote Mr Loverman for Shabba Ranks, so music runs deep. Odd Future eat up a lot of oxygen in the late 00s and early 10s. The most attention-seeking alpha male, Tyler, the Creator, looks destined to do a Beyoncé. Then a truly extraordinary thing happens: Tyler’s ascent stalls. And three far greater talents spin off OFWGKTA

There are a few Google search inputs guaranteed to deliver pictures of the current Commander-in-Chief: “Donald Trump,” “US President,” and “idiot.” Yes, as Great Britain continues to mock the US leader, it seems the world’s most popular search engine has turned against him, too.As mildly humorous as it is to search “idiot” on Google Images and see varying photos of Trump, it’s also a noteworthy example of how subjective and easily impressionable Google really is. Yahoo’s search results for “idiot” don’t show Trump; interestingly, they actually show a picture of Obama among its top results. Bing does the same. And that begs the question of why Google, one of the world’s most popular engines, allows its results to be skewed by political fervor.Initial search results for "idiot' that featu
