The Google Material Theme is coming to more and more products as seen with Android P DP4 and Google Maps just last month. This new look is now being tested in one aspect of the Google app, while a related redesign of the Google Feed is more widely rolling out. Nintendo Switch In recent weeks, we’ve spotted the Google app testing a new search bar directly underneath the logo and just above the list of Feed articles. This new design drops the previous slightly rounded, rectangular box for a pill-shaped search bar. This faint gray outlined boundary drops the shadow effect for a cleaner look that is inline with Google’s Material Theme, as well as the proliferation of pill buttons throughout the company’s recent updates. Meanwhile, back in April, the Google app began testing a new loo

That trend has continued to hold for several days. Here is the chart showing the sudden increase in mobile thumbnails: The percentage of Google mobile search results showing image thumbnails jumped significantly on July 13 and continues to hold steady at 44.5 percent. 2017 was a very bad year, and Google's here to remind us of that.  The tech giant released a list and "Year in Search 2017" video detailing all of 2017's highest-trending searches, which, as you may have guessed are all fairly grim.  The moving video begins on a somber note, with searches that include: "how far can North Korean missiles go" and "how do wildfires start." Yikes. But before you give up on humanity completely, Google does remind us of the more hopeful and inspiring parts of 2017, like the Women's March and Lena Waithe's moving Emmy acceptance speech.  We're not sure we even wanna know what fresh horrors Google's 2018 year in review will someday contain. Blitz summer body odor The heat and humidity of a Japanese summer can sometimes feel like being in a sauna, and as temperatures reach 30 degrees and over, sweat often becomes a nuisance. To make matters worse, sweat usually comes with body odor, which can be embarrassing, not to mention unpleasant for people nearby. Health gadget manufacturer Tanita Corporation’s ES-100 is an odor analyzer designed to help its users decide if they need to reach for the deodorant or go less heavy on the perfume. The ES-100 measures the level of aroma with a semi-conductor gas sensor — similar to that of breathalyzers — that monitors the air for molecules that cause bad smells. Just hold the device close to the usual culprits (armpits, neck, head) and wait 10 seconds and it will give a readin

Mayor de Blasio was in the Rockaways this morning to announce the first of four dockless bike-share pilot areas. We’ll be running reader reviews of the different services on offer — stay tuned. For now, the big news is that six months into his second term, de Blasio has finally been spotted riding a bicycle. The mayor biked the last leg of his trip to the press conference, side by side with Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. Based on the footage reporters posted to Twitter, de Blasio acquitted himself well on a Pace bike, despite what appears to be a seatpost set a little too low for his 6’5″ frame (which might be the highest setting available). I personally approve of the decision to go helmetless on a hot summer day biking on a nearly empty boardwalk. Mayor on a bike

“So you’re going to the Comic Con?” asked a co-worker after I’d given him a rundown of the Mount Airy events I was covering this past Saturday. “Yes,” I answered, and having detected the slightest hint of an eye roll, I asked him if he knew anything about it. “It’s alright,” he said. “They try. But if you want to see what a real Comic Con is like, you should go to Supercon in Raleigh. That’s where I’m going.” After learning that he has some unresolved issues resulting from a childhood crush on the Pink Power Ranger, I find out she will be appearing in Raleigh and a quick Google image search showed she was visually unchanged from her 1990s heyday. I wondered for a second if she is destined for a Thelma Lou future, and if she will still be making personal appearances as the same characte

Jennifer Lopez isn't just a great source of fitness inspiration. She's also giving us some athleisure inspiration, by way of pop-culture-inspired activewear brand Niyama Sol.Chances are, you remember the dress. Lopez wore a tropical, green Versace gown with a neckline that plunged past her bellybutton to the Grammys in 2000, and it was instantly iconic. In fact, the dress inspired Google Image Search; the day after the Grammys, Lopez's dress was "the most popular search query" Google had ever seen. In response, Google had the idea to let users search for images. So the dress has made not only fashion history, but also tech history. Now, activewear brand Niyama Sol is selling limited edition leggings in a print based on the famous Versace number. "We noticed that Jennifer had been quietly...

Raleigh, N.C. — Summer vacations are in full swing, and more and more people are skipping the hotel and opting for a vacation rental home. House rentals do not have to follow the same rules as hotels, so Consumer Reports recommends doing your homework and asking questions. Karen Zalusky said when she booked through Airbnb things looked perfect. "As soon as we walked in, you could tell that something wasn't right," she said. Zalusky said there was a terrible smell. It turned out, the homeowner kept pets in a room and didn't clean up after them. "Vacation rentals are not regulated in the same was as hotels, which means you really want to reach out to your host before you book," said Dan Wroclawski, a Consumer Reports home edit
