Google has implemented a new 'Site Isolation' feature in the latest version of its Chrome browser that the company says will help organizations better protect against attacks of the sort enabled by the Spectre processor flaws disclosed earlier this year. The feature has been available on an experimental basis to enterprises since Chrome 63 but has been enabled by default for almost all desktop users with the release of the new Chrome 67. Site Isolation represents a substantial under-the-hood change in Chrome's behavior, said Charlie Reis a Google engineer in a blog July 11. While most users should not see any visible changes when using Chrome, the new feature does impose a 10 percent to 13 percent memory overhead, Reis noted. Google is trying to address this

Google’s Chrome browser is undergoing a major architectural change to enable a protection designed to blunt the threat of attacks related to the Spectre vulnerability in computer processors. If left unchecked by browsers or operating systems, such attacks may allow hackers to pluck passwords or other sensitive data out of computer memory when targets visit malicious sites. Site isolation, as the mitigation is known, segregates code and data from each Internet domain into their own "renderer processes," which are individual browser tasks that aren't allowed to interact with each other. As a result, a page located at arstechnica.com that embeds ads from doubleclick.net will load content into two separate renderer processes, one for each do

Google's Loon balloon-based internet project and its Wing autonomous delivery drone project are to become independent businesses within parent company Alphabet. The two projects started off as part of Google's X division, which aims to work on particularly ambitious 'moonshot'-style projects with the aim of making a significant (10 times, hence the X) impact on hard-to-solve problems. How important is flat architecture to a website?  What about page depth, which is how many pages deep any page is from the homepage, and how it impacts pages based on that depth?  And what about how a website structure impacts new content?  John Mueller from Google addressed this in a recent Google webmaster office hours with advice from Google’s point of view and what site owners can do to make Googlebot understand content and a website better, in quite a lengthy disccussion. The question was concern about adding additional directory depth being utilized to split a company’s different locations into their own subdirectory, and if the use of additional directories would have a negative impact over using fewer ones, and whether the depth of those product pages could hit a point where the

San Jose city leaders gave final approval to Google's massive downtown office complex that will bring with it both upgrades and concerns about housing.Construction of the 1 million-square-foot complex will begin soon on the block between Autumn Parkway and West Julian Street. The new development is expected to house an estimated 5,000 workers."It's gonna bring a variety of upgrades and improvements to the surrounding open spaces," said Peter Leroe-Munoz of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.Spaces certainly seem to be opening up in the area as nearby businesses already are moving away, prompting questions about whether the addition of Google's massive downtown village makes the area too tech-friendly."I think it's gonna be great for the downtown area, for Google coming in, but I do kno...

Ranking on Google Search or in other words, appearing higher in the order of the results from a Google Search is a coveted aspect among websites. So much so that people are hired in the form of experts to make webpages rank higher on Google. And earlier this year Google had announced that it would be making some modifications to how sites are ranked, and the new basis would be how fast the pages are loaded. Google has now apprised that the new update is called the “Speed Update” and it is now rolling out for all users six months after the announcement of the update. The updates is along the lines of what was already announced in January and the purpose seems to be filtering out the slowest pages on the Internet.
