What are the best Black Friday deals? With just four days to go, Best Buy’s impressive 52-page ad and Target’s bold 47-page ad confirm these retailers have many of them. But who comes out on top? There are some big differences and some easy mistakes to make. So let’s make sure you know where you shop.
This is the fifth in my Black Friday Vs Series. Working alongside BestBlackFriday.com, I am analysing the top deals at each of the major retailers to isolate which products you should buy where. You can read my Walmart Vs Best Buy and Walmart Vs Target guides here, while Kohl’s is the surprise package this year.
Where Target Black Friday Beats Best Buy’s Black Friday 2018
Shipping – Target is offering free two-day shipping on all orders with no minimum this holiday season. Best Buy is offering free standard shipping on all orders with no minimum. While Best Buy’s shipping policy is solid, Target’s expedited option is the clear winner.
Black Friday Start Times – Target’s in-store Thanksgiving sale runs from 5pm until 1am. It will then reopen at 7am on Black Friday morning. Best Buy’s Thanksgiving sale also runs from 5pm until 1am. It reopens at 8am on Black Friday morning. Target is giving shoppers an hour earlier start on Black Friday shopping, which can be crucial when every second counts.
Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max – Target is giving a free $250 gift card when activating an iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max with Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T (See Ad Scan Deal). Best Buy is offering $150 in direct savings when activating an instalment plan on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR with Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T (See Ad Scan Deal). While Best Buy’s direct savings are nice, the $250 Target gift card offers better value overall.
Xbox One S – Target will sell the Xbox One S 1TB Minecraft Bundle + Free $20 Gift Card for $199.99 (save $200) (See Ad Scan Deal). Best Buy is offering the same bundle for the same price with no free gift card (See Ad Scan Deal).
55-inch TV – 55 inches is a popular size for TVs this year, and Target offers the best overall value for its featured deal. It is selling an Element 55-inch Smart 4K UHD TV for $199.99 which saves you $180 (See Ad Scan Deal). Best Buy has a Sharp 55-inch Class LED 2160p Smart 4K UHD TV for $249.99 saving you $200 (See Ad Scan Deal). While Sharp is a better brand than Element, Target’s TV is still a great one, and $199.99 for a 55-inch 4K TV is an absolute steal.
REDcard 5% Discount – Target REDcard holders save an additional 5 percent off Black Friday prices. Best Buy has no equivalent program.
Where Best Buy Black Friday Beats Target’s Black Friday 2018
Apple iPhone X – Best Buy is offering savings up to $200 with qualified activation of the iPhone X on Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T (See Ad Scan Deal). Target is only offering a $150 gift card when activating the iPhone X (See Ad Scan Deal). Best Buy is not only offering direct savings, but you do receive $50 more.
Samsung Galaxy Phones – Best Buy is giving direct savings of $300 off the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, S9 and S9+ with qualified activation on Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T (See Ad Scan Deal) and Target is offering the following deals:
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with $300 Target Gift Card with qualified activation on Verizon or AT&T – See Ad Scan Deal
- Samsung Galaxy S9 with $300 Target Gift Card with qualified activation on Verizon, Sprint or AT&T – See Ad Scan Deal
- Samsung Galaxy S9+ with $300 Target Gift Card with qualified activation on Verizon, Sprint or AT&T – See Ad Scan Deal
When the totals are the same, direct savings always win over coupons.
Overall TV Deals – While Target has a solid selection of Black Friday TV deals, Best Buy wins in both quality and quantity. It is featuring over 30 TV deals this year, and many of them are some of the best deals of the year. The top one is the Toshiba 43-inch LED 2160p Smart 4K UHD TV for $129.99 (save $200) (See Ad Scan Deal).
Better Google Pixel Deals – Best Buy is providing $200 off the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with qualified activation on Verizon (See Ad Scan Deal). Target is offering the Google Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL + $200 Target Gift Card on the same network (See Ad Scan Deal). Again, direct savings win out.
Xbox One X – Best Buy will sell the Microsoft Xbox One X 1TB Gold Rush Special Edition Battlefield V Bundle with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + Free Select Xbox One Controller for $429.99 saving you $70 (See Ad Scan Deal). Target has no deals on the Xbox One X this year.
What else should you know about? For my money, Walmart has the best iPhone and Galaxy discounts despite some problems. Kohl’s has the most exciting games console prices and Walmart looks set to have the only PlayStation 4 Pro deal this year.
